Over the course of a career that has spanned decades, Jane L. Powell has demonstrated her soulful style and remarkable vocal range to audiences throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and the Caribbean. If you have been so unlucky as to have missed her live show, you still may have heard Jane singing in a national McDonald’s advertisement, or you may have seen and heard her performances in the Dino DeLaurentis film Marie or in the 1999 New Line Cinema comedy, The Bachelor.
Ms. Powell brings her own style to a song – be it an original composition, a classic R&B or blues tune, a jazz standard, a contemporary dance number, a raw reggae groove, or a gospel anthem. Jane quickly captivates any audience with her musical flexibility, open and playful personality, and often spicy and spontaneous sense of humor. She has performed for demographically diverse audiences at college campuses, performing arts centers, Norwegian Cruise Line ships, corporate functions, nightclubs, resort hotels, and large outdoor festivals and fairs. Having received numerous awards over the years from the National Association for Campus Activities, Jane holds the honor of being the most awarded performer in the history of the organization! Jane has opened for or worked with such acts as Lou Rawls, The Crusaders, Joan Jett, Freddie Jackson, Melba Moore, B.J. Thomas, Koko Taylor, Ernie Watts, Wayne Henderson, Paula Poundstone, and Ray Charles. In reference to her opening for Ray Charles, The Washington Post said, “She stole the night from a legend.” Throughout her career, she has consistently won yearly “Best Vocalist” awards in her hometown of Roanoke, Virginia. Additionally, in 2007 Jane was a featured performer for Queen Elizabeth II and Governor Kaine of Virginia during the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the founding of the Jamestown Colony. Most recently, Jane has been sharing the stage with America’s Got Talent winner, Landau Eugene Murphy, Jr.
Jane L. Powell is a natural artist to span the millennia. She possesses the depth of experience to draw upon the rich traditions of popular music, blend them with her unique vocal abilities and vibrant personality, and create music to uplift any audience.
A few years ago I became chair of the Performing Arts for the Virginia Highlands Festival and I am constantly looking for the best acts for our events within our moderate budget. The kick off event is the Patrons event and it has to be good, real good or I will hear about it and we will not have a great start of events. This year I remembered a group that I presented a number of years ago and I felt they would be perfect, I then called you, Kris, to ask if you could find Jane Powell. I found out that you work with her and was pleased because I knew that this would now be easy to arrange. Jane and her trio played here last night and were a great success! Not only did they do a great performance, they were so easy to work with, it was the kind of job I like: enjoyable from both the presenter's side and the audience side. Thanks for making this perfect event happen! Jane Powell was great! -B.D.
"...my sincerest thanks to you for your musical contribution to the historic visit by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to the Capitol on May 3, 2007. Your performance was a key part to the success of the day...The enthusiasm you demonstrated on stage helped to make Virginia's Royal Welcome a truly special day for everyone in attendance." -Governor Timothy M. Kaine
The place was crackling with energy....She took songs where they had never been before...
Sassy like Pearl Bailey, sings like Aretha Franklin. -Stardust, Las Vegas
She stole the night from a legend [Ray Charles].
A certain talent comes along every 20 years or so - and you're it!
As current past president of Shasta Live, Redding, CA, it was my pleasure to be part of the committee that brought Jane L Powell to Redding's Cascade Theater tonight. What an amazing show. Just when I think that after 15 years as part of this association we cannot possibly do any better, here comes a show like Jane L and her band. It was absolutely amazing. What an emotional evening....running the gamut from making you want to dance, sing along, weep at Amazing Grace and Battle Hymn, to laughing at the wonderful interaction onstage. Coming from a musical family who jams a lot, it was refreshing to see them play off of each other. I would travel miles to see this group again.
Thank all of them for bringing such great entertainment to Redding, CA.
Show was great! Jane and band did a marvelous job with the students in the afternoon class. We had four kids perform for her, and about a dozen more attended. I’m gathering some written comments from them and their teachers, but I know all had a memorable, positive experience. Three of them attended the show that night, and Jane had them come on stage and sing. Another thrill for them. The kids did a great job. Weren’t expecting to do that. Part of Jane’s spontaneous nature.
Crowd loved the show.
