FLY is an all-male contemporary dance company from Houston, Texas known for its high-energy performances with clever staging to a variety of music, including classical, jazz, pop, hip-hop, experimental, drumming and live sound effects.
Labeled an artistic phenomenon, FLY crosses street dance with classical choreographic principles. Their technique is hip hop—very creative, gymnastic, and highly masculine. FLY’s concerts are clean-cut, wholesome artistry designed to cross all audience boundaries—young and old, men and women, sophisticated and unsophisticated—with pieces combining styles and cultures to reflect contemporary Americana.
FLY is currently collaborating with hip-hop icon Rennie Harris, who says he has been a fan of FLY Dance Company for over 10 years: “They understand the true essence of Hip-hop Dance Theater. Their work bridges worlds, promotes harmony of cultures. Committed to the preservation and dissemination of Street Dance culture, ‘The Sons of Texas’ my AKAfor FLY Dance Company has made an everlasting mark on the world.“
In September 2014, FLY was named one of "15 Signs that Contemporary Dance is Alive and Well in Texas" by Arts+Culture magazine.
"Cookin wowed a sellout crowd with its crazy blend of old and new art forms. The rhythmic sophistication of Debussy, Vivaldi and even B.B. King went toe to toe with the physicality and bravado of break dance and hip-hop. The result was an eye-popping 90 minutes of show-off entertainment"
"This ain't no ordinary lacy-fingered, twinkly-toed dance troupe. These FLY guys are tough, with a streetwise, sideways charm; and they know how to move, too, from their knuckles all the way down to their toenails."
"Cool Pops featured a hilarious and wicked interpretation of Michael Jackson and "Billie Jean;" Barron did a terrific stage-crossing moon walk. And when Garcia spelled out L-O-V-E with his upside down body in coordination with a Nat Cole standard, well, it felt like a hip-hop apotheosis of some kind"
Fly presented an exceptional student outreach, and the feedback from teachers and students was beyond positive. After the formal outreach, Fly went into the intermediate school wing and had a “dance party” with two fifth grade classes. This spontaneous integration seems to just represent how Fly operates – a strong desire to inspire, educate and thrill everyone they meet is very evident and much appreciated.
I watched the students in the classroom go from the look of “Here’s another thing our teacher is forcing us to watch” to “This is awesome and we’re having a blast!” I watched the students in the dance studios go from “I’m not sure I can do this,” to “Look at me! I can rock these moves.” Not only that, but the Fly Dance Company troupe taught the kids to support and encourage each other.
Not only was the 10-man group exceptionally talented, athletic and professional, but we have never had a nicer group grace our stage.
I have been at the Palm for nine years, and I have never seen our lobby so active during intermission, with kids everywhere trying to find a small spot to try a little “break dancing” of their own and just moving and dancing their way through the evening. As patrons exited the theatre at the end of the night, it was really wonderful to hear kids and adults alike commenting how much they just wanted to see more FLY. They were gratified as the group did a meet and greet in the lobby, with active sales of Fly schwag, more photo opportunities than I could count, and just overall good will flowing everywhere. The group obviously values connection with their audiences, and in that regard they succeeded exponentially here in Telluride. We can’t wait to bring them back. We can’t wait to bring them back.
Let me begin with saying that I’ve never met a more accommodating group of performers. From the moment they walked in the door, they were ready to do whatever they could to make their time here invaluable to us.
The dance show on the last evening of our time together was the icing on the cake. Fly Dance Company put on an amazing show that wowed the audience. Including a large group of The Dance Academy students as the finale to the show was a great way to show the effect that Fly Dance Company had on everyone who’s lives they touched while they were here - everyone was ready to FLY!
Thank you Fly Dance Company! It was a fantastic experience! We look forward to having you back.
We had the most wonderful experience with Fly Dance Company. We would certainly consider having them again. They were the best group of young men. I adopted them all as my son's while they were here. Fell in love with them. They did a presentation for us at the Baldwin County Juvenile Detention Center. They impressed the staff there very much. They were all great with how they handled the kids. I have great respect for this group. They are very professional.
We so enjoyed Jorge and the guys! They were a class act, for sure. Very appreciative and so easy to work with. Their show was a lot of fun and some unexpected elements that made it an interesting event...
Again, we really enjoyed hosting FLY. The guys were true gentleman and it was a pleasure having them on campus.
